Tasting Notes

Rich amber

Dark and fruity with cinnamon spices, sweet corn, toasted caramel oaks and ripe orange.

A full bodied bourbon that fills the mouth with toasted cereals, light wooded honey, sweet corns, an even spice cinnamon, and citrus zest that levels out with a mild high dryness.

Very smooth on the take down it becomes warming. An exceptional balance is displayed that is not too hot, spicy, or sweet.

Woodford Reserve Distillers Select is a Small Batch, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottled at 43.2% ABV. With a mash bill of 72% Corn, 10% Malted Barley, and 18% Rye Woodford Reserve displays a high spice characteristic often reflecting tannic cinnamon bark. Unlike other bourbons Woodford Reserve is distilled slowly through copper pot stills which gives a high level copper contact during distillation process delivering a much lighter cleaner spirit.

Woodford Reserve is an artisanal distillery that takes the notion of hand crafted very seriously. Under the ownership of the Brown-Forman Corporation, Woodford Reserve is one of the oldest Kentucky distilleries still in operation, beginning production around the time of 1780.

The choice to use Woodford Reserve Distillers Select in our tasting course was not a hard one to make. Woodford Reserve is a modern bourbon refined by artisanal craftsmanship that tips its hat to classic bourbon characteristics.

Woodford Reserve is the only triple distilled bourbon.

The Woodford Reserve Distillery uses copper pot stills imported from Scotland. They are similar in shape and function to Scottish stills unlike the more traditional column stills used throughout Kentucky. Pot stills are slower to use but deliver a high level of copper contact as the spirit vapor condenses up the long goose neck. Copper is a key element in spirit purity.

Small Batch means just what it says. Only a limited amount of barrels are vatted each time to create the distinct flavours. Being small batch means exceptional care to detail is required through every portion the creation process to ensure quality and consistency.

Brown-Forman is one of the largest producers of oak barrels in the US and supply all the wood and barrels used by Woodfrod Reserve.
