In other news yours truly Dramnation host and curator Matt Wooler has taken home 3rd place in the Scotch Malt Whisky Society 2018 Australian Malt Whisky Championship!
Working independently in the spirits trade educating consumers into the category of appreciation is a day to day thing for me. You think you know your
stuff but really it is only when there are certain sign posts to guide you are you even in the ball park. ABV. Region. Style. Flavour. Grain. Oak.
Nose . Taste. With a combination of two or three of these elements it can become increasingly easy to nail down the distillery and expression most
of the time. OK maybe some of the time with accuracy. Try doing it blind. Then having to do it blind again and then again in a competitive form.
That is exactly what the Scotch Malt Whisky Society Malt Tasting Championships are which were held here in Sydney over the weekend.
I took it about as seriously as any tasting I do and that is to have fun. Tasting competitive tasting fez included. Somehow it paid out this time.
Held on Saturday 28th July 2018 at the Australian Museum, competitors nosed and necked their way through the 1st round of 8 whiskies drawn from a short
list of 50. In 30min we were required to guess what’s in front of us and match up the 8 x whiskies from the list of 9 x on the sheet including a red
herring to through you off the sent. Sound easy? I can tell you it wasn't (well not really) and then add a few Hail Mary's in for good measure. 2nd
round saw the top competitors repeat the process guessing 3 whiskies from a list of 6 while the 3rd round was guessing 1 whisky from a list of 8.

Thanks to The Oak Barrel Sydney for the 3rd place voucher which we are eager to dig into on our next visit to the shop. The Oak Barrel is Sydney's premier
supplied of spirits, wines and craft beers and I can gladly say was the first venue I attended to do a whisky tasting many many years ago. Discover
