Glenfidich Single Malt Whisky Review

As the largest selling single malt in the world, Glenfidich barely requires a review. If you're visiting this site you have probably already enjoyed it many times and formed your own opinions on its merits or otherwise. We all owe a great debt to the family run distillery that kept their malt single when all about them were blending theirs - it has enjoyed shelf space in pubs, supermarkets, and restaurants for over fifty years. Light, firm and dry with fruit and a little peat, this is an easy malt to like. If you prefer your malts a little more challenging you should take a look at the older Glenfidich bottlings.

The distillery is still run by the family who founded it in the late 1880's.

Glenfidich is one of only two distilleries to bottle their whiskies on the premises.

A 50 year old Glenfidich once sold at auction in Milan for $70,000.

Megan came home last week and declared she was now a vegetarian. I hoped she would refuse to share a table with the 'savages' but we now have both her and her soapbox during meals. As a caring father my duty is to aid my offspring with their teenage whims, so I've been offering advice to help her avoid accidentaly contributing to animal mortality. 'Don't drink beer at the party - pig bones are used in the clearing process', 'I'll finish those cheese & onion crisps - they contain animal products', and 'I'd love to offer you a lift but many flies will die' bring glares rather than the grateful hugs I've been expecting. So to Glenfidich, or the 'Carling Black Label' of single malts. Far from unpleasant, but then so is Ski yoghurt. Not a great or challenging single malt, but there are far worse around. Worth a try, but if you haven't drunk Glenfidich you probably haven't drunk water - yawn.

Warren is certainly being a little harsh on one of the standard bearers of the single malt revival. Without the plucky determination of this family business refusing to bend or bow in the face of financial and commercial attack by the large blenders of the forties and fifties, we'd probably all be drinking blended malts. As a single malt, this version is satisfactory rather than spectacular, but should lead towards the excellent older Glenfidich malts.
